Sea turtles are beautiful, mysterious, and endangered. They spend their entire lives in the ocean, except when it is time to lay their eggs. At those critical times, females drag themselves from the water on summer evenings to each leave over a hundred eggs in the sands on the same beaches from which they hatched years ago. The hatchlings must find their way to the ocean alone.
Life for a sea turtle is difficult. There are many hazards to face, even before the eggs hatch. Only 1 out of 100 turtles survive to adulthood. Those few who survive may live over 100 years.
This week, visit the Science Center to discover what predators sea turtles have, take your chances as a hatchling, and learn what we can do to help these amazing creatures. Although we do not have any live sea turtles, you can see some of the shells that protect a turtle.
