Join Indigenous educator and artist Leah Hopkins (Narragansett) to learn how to make corn husk figures. Typically made at our Annual Corn Festival, Leah will be demonstrating and leading participants through the steps of making a small corn husk figure that children can enjoy. Corn husk figures are toys made by historic and contemporary Northeastern Indigenous families and are often gifts for children.Materials needed: corn husks, cotton string or yarn, scissorsAbout Leah Hopkins
Leah is an enrolled citizen of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. Leah holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Rhode Island, and has a background in museum and tribal education that spans over 10 years, working with schools, universities, non-profit organizations and tribal communities. Leah has done and continues to do extensive work within the New England region to promote the visibility, histories cultural complexities and cultural continuity of the area’s Indigenous peoples
