Duxbury Beach, April 9, 2014

April is a great month to get out birding in Massachusetts. It’s a transitional time when winterers may linger and early migrants may show up. In a two-hour walk on Duxbury Beach we scored 37 species of birds, including a Northern Harrier, three Ospreys, an Eastern Phoebe, and the species seen below:

A singing Horned Lark, a grassland species looking for a home; look for them to breed at the Plymouth airport.

A Common Loon in full regalia (i.e., breeding plumage). Expect him to fly north to breed on ponds in northern New England and in Canada.

A truly unexpected Lapland Longspur, that should already have moved north!

And, of course, a lingering Snowy Owl. Don’t expect to see him/her much longer! In May it’s off to Wompatuck State Park for the warblers. Join us!
